Harvard Is a World Leader in Environmental Sciences

Harvard Community Garden celebrates the first Community Work Day of the summer. People gather to harvest lettuce, pull weeds, and eat salad in the garden plot on Mt. Auburn Street in front of Lowell House at Harvard University.

  • Green is the new Crimson! In a play on Harvard’s traditional color, the Harvard Crimson has gone green with a sustainability campaign, a new permanent Office for Sustainability and dozens of programs which aim to make all activities around campus more environmentally friendly
  • Harvard faculty members are at the forefront of research and policy initiatives from understanding how to improve the efficiency of designer bacteria engineered to produce carbon neutral fuels to participating in President Obama’s bipartisan Commission on how to prevent and mitigate the impact of oil spills that result from offshore drilling
  • An undergraduate concentration in Environmental Science and Public Policy combines courses in biology, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, economics, government, and mathematics to give students the ability to form rational judgments concerning many of the complex environmental challenges confronting society today
  • In 2008, Harvard announced a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 30% below a 2006 baseline by the year 2016, including all new growth
  • As of October 2009, Harvard has 75 buildings registered with the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), 26 of which are certified, the highest number of certified projects of any U.S. university according to the USGBC
